Businesses in 1950s Los Alamitos

This can be kind of misleading, because newspapers at the time considered Los Alamitos to extend east to Miller(Valley View) and South to at least Garden Grove Boulevard.  remember this was all part of the Rancho Los Alamitos.

  • Airport Cafe, 11142 Los Alamitos Blvd.  Lil and Jay Westlake, proprietors.  Cafe reopened in May 1956 after remodeling. (Enterprise, May 3, 1956)  same address as the Boondocks.
  • DeWitt’s Market- 10842 Los Alamitos Boulevard. (Agust 2, 1956 – After 10 years in the grocery business in Los Alamitos, Cleo DeWitt announced the sale of this market to Rees Bros. of Anaheim.  DeWitt purchased the store form Coy Long.  Mr and Mrs DeWitt expect to buy an house trailer and leave for about a month’s rest and vacation, and they said they have no immediate plans for the future after they return,. On their vacation they will tour Utah, Colorado and other states in the area.)
  • Enterprise – Dale Kroesen, proprietor.  Until 1956 it was printed in Cypress
  • Bud’s Hobby Shop – Bud Cook operated this originally out of his garage for its first couple years.

  • R.R. Meunier, barbershop formerly perated by Lee Davis, located behind Jack Baird’s Realty.
  • Conner’s Cafe/also known as Ruth’s Malt Shop — 10955 Los Alamitos Blvd., owned by Bill and Ruth Conners from about 1952, leased it to Mike Husser of Westminster (Enterprise, May 17, 1956).

  • Jack Baird Real Estate & General Insurance – 11162 Los Alamitos Blvd.  His home/office was designed by his son-in-law, award-winning architect Edward Killingsworth, and the mid-century modern/post and beam structure won a number of “small office” design awards.
  • Elmer’s Signal Service – 10772 Los Alamitos Blvd.  (Mel Lewis of Garden Groive, proprietor. handles Harbor gasoline) Enterprise, August 16, 1956.
  • Dr. Val E. Sneed, optometrist – 10881 Los Alamitos Blvd.
  • Palm Tree Cafe (see crime 1956).  was referenced as a place where motorcycle gangs hung out.  10761 Los Alamitos Blvd.  By Dec. 13, 1956   it had been sold and remodeled and reopened as Robert Leo’s Pantry.
